Phycoremediation is an algal-based emerging technology applied to remove various pollutants in water. It is a low cost, eco-friendly and easily manageable remediation strategy. In this technique, algae are used as agents of remediation, and so far, a number of algae have been identified with high potential to detoxify various kinds of pollutants like nutrients, heavy metals, radionuclides, herbicides, pesticides, etc. Phytoremediation refers to the technologies that use plants to clean up the soil, air, and water that have been contaminated by chemicals. Along with being a cost-effective method for environmental redressal, Phytoremediation has also proven to be a super solution in meeting any form of environmental challenges. Phycoremediation has been demonstrated to be a very beneficial method circumventing the issue of wastewater treatment by expensive, environment degrading chemicals. Lab-scale studies on algae for wastewater treatment have shown the reduction in levels of nutrients, heavy metals, COD, BOD, coliforms, and various other disease-causing pathogens from simulated and real wastewater. 1.1.
